Mars Odyssey was touted as being the "most reviewed project" in NASA history, and the Red Team review was offered as evidence of that claim. The Mars Odyssey Independent Assessment Team (IAT), formed for the review of parts problems, found evidence of poor design practices in the electronics, and was unable to resolve the parts problems. The IAT was furthermore prevented from reviewing the design or any worst case analyses that had been performed by the contractor. The Red Team review was obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, and no mention of the parts problems or design issues was found in it. This paper will discuss the Red Team review and interviews with persons who were part of the review.
