Major General Richard A. Hack

Biography
Major General Richard A. Hack assumed the duties of the U.S. Army Materiel Command’s Chief of Staff on July 27, 2001. AMC is one of the largest commands in the Army, with more than 50,000 employees and activities in 42 states and in over a dozen foreign countries.
Major General Hack is a second-generation Army officer. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Upon completion of the Ordnance Basic Course, he was assigned to Fort Knox, Ky. where he served as Platoon Leader and later Shop Officer for the 530th and 514th Maintenance Companies. He was then assigned to Schweinfurt, Germany as Shop Officer of the 596th and 903d Maintenance Company and served as Commander, 42d Maintenance Company in Furth, Germany.
Following the Ordnance Advanced Course, Major General Hack participated in the Training with Industry program at Sikorsky Aircraft Company in Stratford, Conn., and was subsequently assigned to Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., as a Materiel Management Staff Officer and later as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Armament Materiel Command.
After graduation from Command and General Staff College, Major General Hack was assigned to the 24th Infantry Division (MECH), Fort Stewart, Ga., where he served as Materiel Officer (MATO) and Support Operations Officer for the 724th MSB, Executive Officer of the 24th FSB, and Chief Division Materiel Management Center.
Following his Fort Stewart assignments, Major General Hack served on the USAREUR DCSLOG Staff in Heidelberg, Germany, and then commanded the 705th Main Support Battalion, 5th Infantry Division (MECH) at Fort Polk, La. After command, he was a staff officer at the Ordnance Center and School at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. After attending the U.S. Army War College, Major General Hack returned to 24th Infantry Division where he commanded the 24th Infantry Division Support Command. He then served as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Materiel Command. General Hack next served as the Assistant Division Commander for Support for the 4th Infantry Division (MECH), Fort Hood, Texas. Next, General Hack served as Commander, 13th COSCOM, Fort Hood. Prior to this assignment he served as the Commanding General of the 21st Theater Support Command, USAREUR, Germany.
Major General Hack holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Virginia Military Institute and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Florida Institute of Technology. His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (4 awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (5 awards), the Army Commendation Medal (3 awards) and the Army Achievement Medal.
